The Designer’s Own Challenge: Renovating a 1960s Semi

There’s an old saying that the "cobbler's children have no shoes," but at Thomas Vaughan Ltd, we believe our team should live the lifestyle we design for our clients.

Today, we’re stepping inside the home of our very own lead designer, Dan Thomas. While Dan was recently shortlisted for Bathroom Designer of the Year 2025, he isn’t working on a sprawling mansion or a new-build penthouse. He’s currently in the middle of a "full rip-out" renovation of the master bathroom in his own standard 1960s semi-detached house right here in South Wales.

The Vision: From "Standard" to "Sanctuary"

Working with a typical 60s layout presents unique challenges—limited space, traditional plumbing, and the need for clever storage. Dan’s goal was to prove that you don’t need a massive footprint to create a high-end, spa-like experience.

The Key Features of Dan’s Design:

  • Industrial Chic: A stunning standalone bath and matching hand-basin, both hand-sprayed in a bespoke Gun Metal finish.

  • Dramatic Textures: A feature shower area clad in Black Marble with a waterfall head for a truly immersive experience.

  • Warmth & Utility: A wood-slatted feature wall that adds organic texture, integrated with glass shelving and hidden inset storage to keep the space clutter-free.

  • The Modern Touch: A sleek glass partition to separate the WC area without closing off the room, plus an illuminated mirror cabinet for that perfect morning glow.

The Reality: The "Ugly Phase"

Every masterpiece starts with a bit of a mess. As you can see from the photos of the current "rip-out" stage, Dan is currently living through the dust and the bare brick that every renovation requires.

Being a Which? Trusted Trader for over 15 years means we don’t just care about the pretty "after" photos. We care about the technical execution during this phase—ensuring the plumbing is perfect, the waterproofing is absolute, and the installation is seamless.

Walk Through the Vision in 4D VR

Dan didn't just draw this on paper; he used our signature 4D VR technology to walk through the space before he even picked up a sledgehammer. This allowed him to check the "flow" of the room and ensure the Gun Metal and Black Marble tones worked perfectly together in the natural light of a 60s semi.

Want to see what’s possible in your own home? You don't need a new-build or a massive budget to have a bathroom designed by a national finalist. We are currently booking for May and June installations.

Whether you want a "Full Job" back-to-brick renovation like Dan’s, or a quick Quooker tap post-fit to add some "wow" to your kitchen, our family-run team is ready to help.
