Bathroom Design Ideas for a Calmer, More Enjoyable Space
Thoughtful bathroom design can make everyday routines simpler, reduce visual clutter and create a space that feels genuinely good to spend time in.
We often think about a new bathroom in terms of tiles, taps, showers and colours. But before choosing any of those things, there's another question worth asking:

How do you want your bathroom to make you feel?
For many of us, the answer is calm. And some of the best bathroom design ideas aren't about adding more to the room – they're about making better use of the space you already have.
We want somewhere that feels organised in the morning, relaxing at the end of the day and easy to keep looking its best in between.
Achieving that isn't simply a matter of choosing a minimalist bathroom suite. It comes from thoughtful design – understanding what you need, where you need it and how the room fits into your everyday life.
Here are some of the things we consider when designing a bathroom that feels calmer, clearer and easier to live with.
Start with your everyday routine
Before deciding where the basin or shower should go, think about what actually happens in your bathroom.
What do you reach for first in the morning? Where do you get ready? Do two people regularly use the room at the same time? Where do towels end up? What needs to be plugged in or charged? Which toiletries need to be within easy reach?
These small details can have a surprisingly big influence on the design.
A bathroom planned around your routine naturally becomes easier to use – and easier to keep organised.
Build storage into the design
Storage shouldn't be something you think about once the bathroom has been designed.
It should be part of the design itself.
Vanity units with generous drawers can keep everyday toiletries close at hand without covering the basin area. Tall cabinetry can make use of otherwise wasted vertical space, while mirrored cabinets can combine practical storage with good lighting.
Even relatively small bathrooms can often accommodate more useful storage than you might expect when it's considered from the beginning.
And importantly, you don't necessarily need more storage.
You need the right storage in the right places.
Give your surfaces room to breathe
Walk into a bathroom with relatively clear surfaces and it immediately feels calmer.
That doesn't mean everything has to be hidden away.
A beautiful soap dispenser, fragrance, plant or favourite bathroom product can add warmth and personality. The difference is that the things on display have been deliberately chosen rather than simply left there because there's nowhere else for them to go.
Wall-mounted furniture and thoughtfully positioned cabinetry can help create that cleaner appearance while still keeping everything you use close by.
Solve the shower bottle problem
You can spend a great deal of time choosing beautiful tiles and shower fittings, only for the finished shower to become surrounded by bottles.
One of our favourite solutions is a recessed shower niche.
Built directly into the wall and tiled as part of the shower, a niche creates a permanent home for shampoo, shower gel and other essentials without adding baskets or shelves that interrupt the design.
It's a relatively small detail, but exactly the sort of detail that makes a well-designed bathroom work better every day.
Reduce visual clutter
Clutter isn't only about possessions.
A room can also feel busy because there are too many competing materials, grout lines, fittings, colours or pieces of furniture.
This is where careful product selection becomes important.
Larger-format tiles can create broader uninterrupted surfaces. Wall-hung furniture can reveal more floor area. Concealed plumbing can simplify the appearance of the room, while coordinating finishes across taps, showers and accessories can help everything feel connected.
The aim isn't necessarily minimalism.
It's visual balance.
Your bathroom can still have colour, texture and personality without everything competing for attention.
Use lighting to change how the bathroom feels
Bathrooms need good practical lighting, particularly around mirrors and areas where you're getting ready.
But practical lighting is only part of the story.
Imagine enjoying a bath in the evening. Do you really want the same bright ceiling lights you'd use while getting ready at seven in the morning?
Layering different types of lighting gives you choices.
An illuminated mirror can provide useful task lighting. Subtle lighting beneath furniture can add depth, while feature or ambient lighting can create a much softer atmosphere later in the day.
Lighting can completely change how you experience the same room.
Choose materials that feel good to live with
A calm bathroom doesn't have to be white.
Warm stone, soft neutrals, timber tones, muted greens, textured tiles and carefully chosen darker finishes can all create beautiful bathrooms.
Rather than following a trend simply because it's fashionable, think about combinations you'll still enjoy several years from now.
Using a restrained palette of complementary materials can also make a room feel more coherent.
Then, if you want to change the mood later, towels, artwork and accessories can introduce new colours without requiring another renovation.
Make it easier to clean
This may not be the most exciting part of designing your dream bathroom, but it can make an enormous difference once you start living with it.
Think about where dust and water will collect.
Wall-hung furniture and sanitaryware can make floors easier to clean. Larger tiles can reduce the number of grout lines. Well-designed shower areas can minimise awkward corners and unnecessary fittings.
Good ventilation is important too, helping the bathroom manage moisture effectively.
The easier your bathroom is to maintain, the easier it is to preserve that clean, calm feeling.
Don't forget warmth
There's another element that can transform how a bathroom feels: warmth.
Stepping onto a warm floor on a cold morning can completely change your experience of the room.
Underfloor heating, heated towel rails and appropriate room heating can all be considered as part of the overall bathroom design rather than treated as an afterthought.
Even the materials you choose can affect the sense of warmth. Timber-effect finishes, softer lighting and tactile surfaces can prevent a contemporary bathroom from feeling cold or clinical.
Leave room for personality
Creating a calmer bathroom doesn't mean creating a room without character.
Quite the opposite.
Once you've reduced unnecessary visual noise, the things you really love can have more impact.
It could be an unusual tile, a statement mirror, beautiful brassware, a favourite piece of artwork, a plant or simply a colour you've always wanted to use.
A successful bathroom should feel like it belongs in your home, not like it has been copied directly from a brochure.
Think beyond what the bathroom looks like today
When investing in a new bathroom, it's also worth thinking about how the room might work for you in the years ahead.
That doesn't mean designing a bathroom that feels clinical or compromising on style.
Thoughtful decisions around shower access, circulation space, storage heights, lighting and ease of use can make a bathroom more comfortable for everyone while helping it adapt as your needs change.
Often, the best future-friendly design is the design you barely notice.
It simply works.
The little details often make the biggest difference
A successful bathroom isn't necessarily the one with the most expensive tap or the largest bath.
It's the one where you reach for your towel and it's exactly where you need it.
Where the toiletries disappear neatly into a drawer.
Where the lighting changes with your mood.
Where the shower is easy to step into, the room is straightforward to clean and everything feels as though it belongs.
These aren't always the details that attract attention in a photograph.
But they're often the things you'll appreciate most after you've lived with your bathroom for a year.
