Reclaiming Independence: Paralympian Sara Head Reviews the Freedom Accessible Kitchen

For many, cooking a bacon and egg sandwich is just a standard breakfast routine. But for Paralympian, Thomas Vaughan Ltd (TVL) Ambassador, and trainee Occupational Therapist (OT) Sara Head, doing just that in our showroom represented a massive milestone: it was the first time she had been able to cook a hot meal for herself in over five years.

Sara's life changed nearly 30 years ago due to an illness that resulted in her using a wheelchair. Today, she is still waiting for her own home kitchen to be adapted with Disability funded grants in Wales. Her story highlights a frustrating reality for many individuals with restricted mobility—but it also highlights why we do what we do at Thomas Vaughan Ltd.

We invited Sara into our TVL Accessible kitchen to put a Freedom by Symphony design to the test. Watch the full 6-minute video below to see her demonstration, or read on to discover the key features that make this kitchen a game-changer for independent living.

Cooking in the Thomas Vaughan Ltd Accessible Kitchen

Designing for Freedom: Key Features of the TVL Accessible Kitchen

A truly accessible kitchen isn’t just about lowering a countertop; it’s about intelligent, thoughtful engineering that removes barriers. During her cooking demonstration, Sara highlighted several revolutionary features that allowed her to navigate the space safely and efficiently:

1. The Rise and Fall Worktop

Standard kitchens force wheelchair users to work at awkward, unsafe heights. The Freedom kitchen features a motorized rise and fall worktop with a sleek waterfall edge. Because there are no cabinets blocking the space underneath, Sara can position her wheelchair directly under the counter, allowing her to get closer to the surface and comfortably reach across the worktop and into the corners.

2. Connected Hob and Extractor Tech

Overstretching across a hot stove to turn on an extractor fan is a major safety hazard. Sara demonstrated the smart, integrated technology between the hob and the extractor hood, which communicate automatically. No stretching, no straining—just seamless safety.

3. The Automated Fridge

Breaking the vacuum seal on a standard refrigerator door can require significant upper-body strength. The TVL kitchen features an automated fridge that breaks its own seal and pops open with a gentle push or a simple voice command, making fresh ingredients accessible to everyone.

4. Smart Storage Solutions

Instead of high cupboards and deep, unreachable base units, this kitchen utilizes clever pull-down baskets and accessible drawers. Sara showed how these options ensure that heavy pots, pans, and everyday ingredients remain fully within arm's reach.

5. Safe Water Access & The ZIP Tap Innovation

Reaching for a traditional tap at the back of a sink can be incredibly difficult from a seated position. Sara demonstrated our front-access tap, which brings water control to the front of the counter. Furthermore, she showcased the advanced ZIP tap system, which features a new front control box. This brilliant design allows users to dispense boiling water safely without having to lean over the sink or get anywhere near the boiling steam.

Inspiration for OTs, Hope for Homeowners

This video was designed with two distinct audiences in mind:

  • For Occupational Therapists (OTs): We want to inspire you when planning future kitchen layouts for your clients. Seeing a trainee OT and wheelchair user like Sara navigate the space provides invaluable insight into how spatial design impacts daily functional living.

  • For Individuals with Restricted Mobility: We want to show you what is possible. Living with a disability shouldn't mean sacrificing your passion for cooking or your independence. If a kitchen is designed right, you can have a full, vibrant life in it.

"If it's designed right, you can have a life in the kitchen." — Sara Head
