At just 18, Dan Thomas seemed like any other fit, healthy young man with a passion for life. An active boxer, gym-goer, and outgoing teenager, he never imagined that a routine illness could nearly cost him his life. In January, Dan began to feel unwell, attributing his stiffness and fatigue to overexertion at the gym. Even after a night out with friends in Cardiff, he dismissed his symptoms as a hangover.

But within 24 hours, his condition deteriorated dramatically. Dan collapsed at home, and his parents were faced with the unimaginable: the family was told to prepare for the worst. Dan had contracted meningococcal septicaemia, a life-threatening bacterial infection, and was rushed to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital A&E in Llantrisant. He was placed in an induced coma, on a ventilator, and underwent multiple surgeries after developing severe complications, including compartment syndrome in both hands.

After eight days in a coma and nearly a month in intensive care, Dan began the long road to recovery. Despite the physical and emotional toll, his resilience shone through. Supported by his family and inspired by the care he received, Dan returned home determined to make a difference—not just for himself, but for others.

It was this life-altering experience that refocused Dan’s vision and inspired a new chapter for Thomas Vaughan Ltd. Recognising the importance of safety, accessibility, and thoughtful design in the home, Dan spearheaded the launch of Accessible by Thomas Vaughan, a specialist service dedicated to designing kitchens and bathrooms for people with disabilities, age-related mobility challenges, or trauma.

Under Dan’s creative leadership as Chief Designer, the Accessible range has redefined what it means to combine functionality, independence, and style. His designs prioritise safety without compromising on elegance, giving clients confidence, comfort, and peace of mind in spaces that are truly their own.

This remarkable journey—from near-tragedy to professional triumph—has now been recognised nationally. Dan Thomas has been shortlisted for Bathroom Designer of the Year 2025, a testament to his innovation, skill, and the way his personal story has shaped a meaningful, industry-leading approach to accessible living.
